Sony it set to release its first ever Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player, it has been announced.
The BDP-350 will offer BD-Live capabilities when the system goes online, reports Tech Radar.
According to the website, this means that whatever disc people buy, the player will be able to display all features that make use of the web-based format.
"The BD player is also an upscaler, so bung a standard DVD into the tray and it will convert the signal from 480i to 1080p," the news provider states.
Sony is also pushing the device’s green credentials, stating that the player uses 21 per cent less power consumption in playback mode, the website adds, though it does not make clear what figure this is a comparison to.
Earlier this week, Blorge.com explained that there are three types of Blu-ray player on offer - the 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 profile systems.
According to the website, 1.0 systems offer basic functionality, while 1.1 devices offer picture-in-picture capabilities.
