Gentlemen planning on buying anengagement ring might find it tricky to locate one that suits their wife-to-be, according to one expert.

However, there are some simple steps to take to ensure that their loved one is not disappointed with the item of jewellery, reports Theage.com.

Speaking to the newspaper, jeweller Peter Michaelson offered some tips on how to buy a quality ring without spoiling the surprise.

He said: "One of the best ways to subtly gain information is to ask your partner’s opinion about other people’s jewellery."

Men might also want to take a look at a woman’s existing items of jewellery to get a feel for what she likes, Mr Michaelson added.

Finally, men might want to confer with their partner’s friends over what to buy, but only if they can keep a secret, he stated.

Meanwhile, one star who does not seem to have splashed out on an engagement ring is rapper P Diddy.

The star has denied that he is to marry Cassandra Ventura any time in the near future.
