A new range of LCD and plasma TVs featuring built-in cable capabilities could be on the way after a major electronics company announced a new deal.
Sony Electronics has made an agreement with several cable companies in the US to use their tru2way technology within their machines, which would mean that households would no longer need to buy a separate set-top box to support their set.
According to reports online, the new system would also give people full access to other interactive programs as well as TV channels.
Edgar Tu, the senior vice-president of TV operations for Sony Electronics, said the agreement was "good news for consumers".
He added: "A national plug-and-play digital cable standard for interactive TV receivers, recorders and other products that is transferable and viable wherever you live is ideal for today’s mobile society."
No plans have yet been revealed to introduce the same technology to the UK.
Sony recently launched an upscaling DVD player designed to make standard definition films suitable for viewing at a high definition image.
