Portable navigation maker Garmin has released a redesigned version of its GPS dog tracking collar.
For use with Garmin’s Astro GPS Dog Tracking System, the DC 30 is "more rugged" while its antennas are positioned differently for optimal tracking, the company said.
The small GPS antenna, which is integrated into the collar strap, are positioned on top of the dog’s neck, clearly exposed to satellites.
Meanwhile, the transmitter antennas are situated inside the collar’s main housing which is weighted to sit below the dog’s neck.
Weighing 8.7 ounces (247 grams) the DC 30, when used in conjunction with the Astro 220 receiver, can pinpoint a dog - even in dense cover - up to seven miles away, Garmin claims.
Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice-president of worldwide sales said the new collar "is designed to stand up to the torturous abuse of hunting dogs".
In related news, Consumer Reports recently rated the Garmin Nuvi 760 the best GPS system after conducting in-lab and on-the-road tests for 39 devices.
