GPS devices can save on fuel costs by reducing journey times and distances, it has been claimed.
According to Kicking Tires, empirical research from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute shows that use of portable navigation systems has helped to cut both the time taken and distance travelled by drivers.
The news provider claims that the cost of GPS devices has "come down drastically in recent years" with consumers able to purchase one for $100 (£50).
Consumer Reports (CR) recently concluded that established GPS brands such as Garmin, TomTom and Magellan are still producing the best devices.
After several months of in-lab and on-the-road tests of 39 GPS systems, the review publication rated the Garmin Nuvi 760 as the best giving it an "excellent" overall score.
According to CR experts, the Nuvi 760 is a good all-round package that is easy to use, with intuitive controls, good guidance and some advanced features.
The Garmin Nuvi 660, TomTom Go 920T, Garmin Nuvi 350 and Magellan Maesro 4250 were also commended.
