Students looking to buy a laptop should opt for one with a built-in wireless network card, according to one expert.
Speaking to the South End News, Chris Demos, lead systems administrator of C&IT departmental computing services and laptop purchasing consulting, explained that cars which are built into devices usually have better reception than external antennas.
He also recommends that people consider what they will be using a laptop for before they purchase it.
Mr Demson said: "If you are a novelist that will only do one thing on your laptop, then $600 portable computers are great.
"However, a computer by definition is a multi-purpose machine."
Brand names such as Dell, Apple and Lenovo are usually worth paying extra for, he added.
Recently, Personal Computer World described the Samsung Q2310 notebook as a "great workhorse laptop".
According to the news provider, the device also features a wide range of connectivity options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and +EDR.
