Running shoes which feature metal springs in the sole enable users to walk, run and stand with less strain.
That is the conclusion of Andrew B Krafsur, the founder and chief executive of WaveSpring manufacturer Spira.
Mr Krafsur explained to US publication the Richmond Times Dispatch that the springs are mechanical and do not break down like gel or foam cushioning agents.
Furthermore, he noted, they "return energy" - meaning users can walk, run and stand with less strain on their body - and reduce impact on joints.
Depending on the size and type of shoe in question, according to the Spira boss, different sizes and quantities of springs can be used in the manufacturing process.
Referring to his firm’s favoured means of marketing, Mr Krafsur continued: "We’re finding the direct-to-consumer model is actually a great way to build a brand and tell a story that we can’t do with traditional retail because the market’s so crowded and the players so big and we’re such a small company."
Athletic experts have previously attributed WaveSpring technology’s effectiveness to its ability to store and disperse energy with every step.
