People would rather shop for clothing themselves rather than receive items for Christmas, new research has suggested.
According to the study by Churchill Home Insurance, 26 per cent of consumers feel that an unfashionable or out-of-date garment can be one of the worst gifts they can receive.
Nearly 20 per cent claimed they do not appreciate being given lingerie or underwear, while over one in ten has little enthusiasm for receiving socks.
Claire Foster, spokesperson for Churchill Home Insurance, said it was "almost inevitable" that people would receive presents they are keen on.
"The New Year is a good time to have a clear-out and put unwanted items to good use, for example selling them on or giving them away to charity," she added.
Victoria Beckham visited the UK this week to promote the launch of her new range of dresses, which are now on sale at Selfridges.
The collection includes 12 garments that are expected to sell for prices from £600.
