Those concerned about the environment should invest in a dishwasher, according to one green publication.
According to Plenty Magazine, dishwashers have an underserved reputation for being wasteful.
"Crazy as it may seem, the dishwasher’s actually the way to go. Unless you have superpowers that allow you to scrub fifteen entire place settings with less than three gallons of water."
However, those with older machines should consider upgrading as these are inefficient.
The website also quotes environmentalist Ed Begley Jr as saying the dishwasher is the greener option "no matter how you slice it".
It also cites research from the University of Bonn which claims that dishwashing is one of the things that machines do better.
Modern dishwashers are descended from an 1886 invention by Josephine Cochrane who displayed her innovation at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.
Cochrane was a wealthy socialite from Shelbyville who had grown tired of her servants breaking the china.
