Microsoft’s Zune mp3 player has been described by a writer as an "unlikely" sign of what the future may hold for such devices.
In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Claudine Beaumont has said the device’s ability to allow users to temporarily share music with friends is a feature that over electronics companies are considering.
She went on to explain that all mp3 players in the future may allow their owners to "try new music before they buy", before suggesting other ways in which the devices could become "entertainment centres in their own right".
The writer said: "Streaming services, such as the Slingbox, which shifts programmes from your home television to a compatible device anywhere in the world, could be built into mp3 player."
"Gaming, too, could find a natural home, with music devices offering the sort of gaming experience enjoyed on Sony’s PSP, or Nintendo’s DS."
Ms Beaumont’s comments come after PC Advisor recently reported that Sandisk is to launch a new Sansa Fuze mp3 player in the UK.
